Mario Moisés Alvarez is a Professor at the Centro de Biotecnología-FEMSA and the Bioengineering Department, and a Rómulo Garza Insignia Professor at Tecnológico de Monterrey in Monterrey, México. Alvarez has been a Visiting Professor at the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology at the BWH, Harvard Medical School (2014-2016), and a Visiting Professor at the Microsystems Technology Laboratories (MTL) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2015-2017). He is the director of the Biomedical Engineering Group at Tecnológico de Monterrey. His research interest is focused on the integration of bio-, micro-, and nanotechnologies into tissue, biomedical, and biopharmaceutical engineering applications.

Professor Alvarez completed an industrial postdoctoral stay at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology at Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, USA. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering from Rutgers University (2000), a M.Sc. in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering from Rutgers University (1999), and a M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering (1993), and a B.Sc. in Biochemical Engineering from Tecnológico de Monterrey (1991).

Alvarez has published 85+ papers in international journals, including Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, Nature Materials Reviews, Advanced Materials, ACS Nano, Physical Review Letters, Biomaterials, Critical Reviews in Biotechnology, Lab on a Chip, Scientific Reports, PLoS One, and Biotechnology and Bioengineering. He has been granted with 3 US patents and 12 Mexican patents. His research contributions have been cited more than 2900 times (H index=31). Alvarez is a permanent member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences and a member of the National Research System, where he has been awarded with the highest ranking for Mexican researchers (SNI Level III). Alvarez has directed 12 Ph.D. dissertations, more than 40 M.Sc. thesis, and has mentored 9 post-docs.
