Mónica is a Ph.D. candidate at ITESM's Biotechnology Program. During her undergrad studies, she participated in the BioMaP REU (Biological Materials and Processes Research Experience for Undergraduates) program in Iowa State University in 2012, working with drug delivery systems composed by pentablock co-polymers for cancer treatment. She also completed a six months research internship in Chinoin Pharmaceutical Products S.A. de C.V. in 2013 with the project of creating a new viral and bacterial vaccine for canines. She completed her B.Sc. degree at ITESM majoring in Biotechnology Engineering and minoring in Molecular Biology in 2014. She completed her M.Sc. in Molecular Biology at IPICYT in 2017. Her project was related to the search of bioactive compounds in plant extracts for their potential use for the treatment of diabetes, hypertension and obesity. She has experience in cell culture, bioassays, bioprinting, tumor-on-chip systems, molecular biology techniques and phytochemistry. Aditionally, she gained teaching experience by working two years as a high school teacher in Cuauhtemoc University. Now she also teaches a tissue engineering class at Tecnologico de Monterrey for biomedical engineering students. Her current project consists in using bioprinting and mini-reactors to fabricate a tumor-on-chip model for colon cancer. Her hobbies include artistic and sport activities such as jazz dancing, aerial silks, singing, boxing, CrossFit and yoga.
