Our research integrates bio- micro- and nanotechnologies into the solution of relevant problems related to human health. We do biomedical and biopharmaceutical engineering, with a strong accent in Tissue engineering. Within Tissue Engineering, we cover a spectrum from the design and characterization of novel materials (biomaterials engineering), the use of microfabrication technologies to shape biomaterials into particular applications (with an emphasis in bioprinting and microfluidic-based fabrication), to the application perse (mainly tissue regeneration or development of organ-on-chip systems).
In addition, we actively work in the niche of diagnostic applications at the point of care (i.e., highly portable, cost-efficient, rapid and easy to operate devices for the diagnostics of infectious diseases in underprivileged or remote areas, at the battle field, or in disaster zones). Within biopharmaceutical engineering, we center our activity on the design and production of biopharmaceutical compounds and recombinant vaccines. Our aim is to improve the existing engineering to produce biopharmaceuticals to shorten the time from design to first test in humans. In this intention, there is a strong connection with our work on the design of organ-on-chip platforms for expedite drug-screening.
Our philosophy is simple: Relevant Cool Science
